A Story that Challenges Assumptions and Defies Criticism
As our community navigates the realities of homelessness, PorchLight is frequently part of the ongoing conversation. It has been brought to our attention many times that statements from community members at City Council meetings, comments on neighborhood social media pages, and broader public discourse sometimes include criticism of our work.
Rather than speak out against a false narrative, we choose to remain focused on what matters most: the men we serve every single day in East King County. Our work is not shaped by online commentary. It is shaped by the men who come through our doors seeking safety, stability, and a way forward.
One of those men is Steve.
Steve heard the negative comments. He saw the posts. And he asked if we would capture his story.
He wanted to be a different voice. Because, in his words…
If PorchLight wasn’t here for me to walk into and ask for help, I don’t know where I’d be.
Steve
We are honored to share his story in his own voice, with the hope that it helps break stereotypes and sheds light on the work happening inside our walls every day.
Steve’s story did not change overnight. It changed because there was a place for him to land. A bed. A meal. A shower. Staff who knew his name. Consistent support while he rebuilt stability.
That kind of steady presence only happens when people decide to stand with us month after month.
LightKeepers help make that possible.
A monthly gift ensures the doors stay open, the meals are served, and the next man who walks through our doors finds the same chance Steve did. It is practical. It is dependable. It is powerful.
If you believe in stories like Steve’s, we invite you to join the LightKeepers.
